The next show, and the last show

Thanks to all who came to our show at Red Devil Lounge last night for Jonathan Mann‘s 1000th Song-A-Day and Album Release show. It was truly an honor and a blast to share the stage with over a dozen other extremely talented musicians. Aside from our own set, we joined Jonathan Mann on stage with his core band, The Rock Cookie Bottoms; Dustin Smurthwaite of Ladies & Gentlemen on trombone; Jeanne Geiger of Teeny Tiger (who also played trombone for Radiation City a few weeks ago at Bottom of the Hill); Ami Nashimoto of All My Pretty Ones on cello; Meeranai Shim on cello; Sarah Dabby of The Family Crest on violin; and Ivory “Sweaty Girlfriend” King on bass clarinet.

Matt also played trombone, keys, percussion, autoharp, and drums, and I got to play guitar and bass for some songs. The biggest challenge I think was trying to fit 13 or so people and equipment on that tiny stage, but Matt made it happen. Here’s the video for Mann’s 1000th song from last night. As you can already tell, even the camera couldn’t capture everyone on stage:

Our next show is actually coming up pretty fast, on Monday, Oct 3 at a new music venue called Vitus that recently opened up in Oakland. Not only do they have killer deep fried zucchini sticks and Bloody Marys with BACON garnish (yeah, dude), the show is also FREE! And we’re playing with our friend crashfaster, and an electronica duo named HoverKraft.

We’re playing a few more shows in October, so make sure you check out our Shows page on the site, but our LAST show of the year will be with Planet Booty at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. After that, we’re going to concentrate on new songs and a new album until 2012, so make sure you’re at Cafe Du Nord on Saturday, October 29!

Bay Area shows in October

This Wednesday we’re playing a mini set for Jonathan Mann’s 1000th Song-A-Day/Album Release Show at Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco. On top of that, we’ll be joining him during his set, accompanying his songs. Matt will do what he does best, playing multiple instruments, and Lizzie will be playing some guitar and bass on a few songs. Either way, this event is bound to be a historic one. Mann has been writing a song every day since 2009, and has also been known for his Game Jew series on YouTube and having his iPhone 4 antennae song play during an Apple keynote:

San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Cruz

We’ve been spending our mini hiatus working on new songs and *still* waiting for Matt’s baby to be born. But we are playing in San Francisco in less than a month! If you’re in the area, catch us for FREE SHOW on Sunday, September 4. We’re playing Convergence Festival at the Japantown Peace Plaza at 12 p.m. For more details, check out our Shows page, or view the Facebook Event page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=256156604397453

And remember that time we worked on a song for Jonathan Mann’s Song-A-Day: The Album project? On our Quest Coast Tour, we took over his livestream and recorded parts with crashfaster on Jon’s Song-A-Day #905: The Only Way I Know How. On September 28, Jonathan Mann will be having his 1000th Song-A-Day Song and Album Release Show at Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco. We’ll be playing with him live! It’s bound to be a crazy event, so don’t miss out. Check out the video for the song we did with him below:

Lastly, excited to announce that we’ll be playing a show in October opening for The Phenomenauts and The Bloodtypes! This will be at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz. More info on that as the date nears.

Thanks again for everyone’s patience with receiving the limited edition physical EPs for Anything Past That. It seems as though international orders have started to make their way to their rightful owners. We’ve received some e-mails from people who haven’t gotten their orders yet and we’re doing our best to resolve them ASAP.

For those who missed out on pre-ordering a limited edition EP, we’ll have a small number of them for sale at PAX Prime 2011, which is in two weeks! Lizzie will be doing a set with crashfaster at Jamspace on Saturday, August 27. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to find out how to get one.

Quest Coast Tour Diary #3

Gosh, I thought this would be a brief post, but so many things happened in the last 24 hours. We’re currently in Kirkland, WA staying with our dear friend Salisbury after having played an EPIC show last night at Pink Gorilla in Seattle. I try to choose when I use the word “epic” wisely, but I’d say this time would be very appropriate… wouldn’t you think?

Also, two great videos went live yesterday. The one above is a short montage of our journey to Portland, OR, plus some live footage of our set at Backspace. We’ll be posting another one soon of our Seattle portion of the tour, but first, here’s the video from the Song-A-Day thing we did for Jonathan Mann last Thursday:

For those who missed the livestream two days ago on songatron.com, we and crashfaster spent all day tracking instrumental parts on this song. Crashfaster tracked Game Boy and vocoder, I tracked some guitar, and Matt tracked –wait for it– bass, toy piano, accordion, organ, and synthesizer, and we all tracked some handclaps. Matt also choreographed our dance for the song. Check it out at the end of the video.

Today, we’re heading back to Portland, OR to party at a house show and say goodbye to our friends there. I personally am not ready to go back to the Bay Area, but we’ll see you all at our homecoming show at DNA Lounge on July 7! You can already get advance tickets here.

I asked Matt if he had a quote for the end of this post:

“Pfff, no. Too early for that.” -Matt Payne

Whoa, we’re totally in Portland, OR right now! We just played a super cool show at Backspace last night with crashfaster, A Gentlemen’s Picnic, and BPM Ensemble. Major thanks to Apes Tapes for putting this show together for us, and to Radiation City for showing up. Speaking of the two, check out the chip cover we did of Radiation City’s “The Color of Industry” on Apes Tapes. This, and a number of other chip remixes will be included in a future Apes Tapes release. More info on that soon.

Right now we’re livestreaming on http://www.songatron.com for Jonathan Mann’s Song-A-Day: The Album project! We’re tracking parts for the song “The Only Way I Know How” with crashfaster. There’s still a lot to do left for the stream, so you can still (maybe) tune in, at least if I get this post up in time. Check out the song in its demo form here:

Tomorrow, we’re heading up to Seattle, WA to play a show at Pink Gorilla. Then we’re coming back down to Portland, OR and are hopefully playing a house party we were able to get on at the last minute! Follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook to get details on that as that comes.

Also, special, special thanks to AJAPOPFILMS who is touring with us and making rad videos along the way! We’re heading back home this weekend and will be playing our homecoming show at DNA Lounge in San Francisco on July 7, which will also be the first PulsewaveSF of many. We are totally psyched for this, and it’s going to be a huge show. And for those anxiously waiting, yes — our EP will be ready by then. 🙂

“Looks good to me. Count me in, sign me up.” -Matt Payne
